The Mayflower Primary School

SPORT

At Mayflower, we believe that P.E. (and sports) transcends the national curriculum. As soon as pupils arrive in EYFS (early years), we begin to instill in them the fundamental skills that will allow them to live an active, healthy life. And as pupils progress through the school, we provide them with the opportunity to apply these skills to a range of different sports.

Not only does this allow them to develop teamwork, critical thinking and problem solving - but we also believe that 'there is a sport out there for everyone', and this is the perfect time for them to discover it.

Last Year's Sporting Events - 2022/2023

Over the course of the year, Mayflower entered 22 sporting events/competitions - providing 121 DIFFERENT pupils with the opportunity to represent their school.

We have achieved:

External Providers

Mayflower works closely with a number of external providers to offer the best sporting experiences for all of our pupils.

Colchester United Football Club

Representatives from Colchester United Football Club come into school every Monday afternoon to educate all pupils on the benefits of exercise and sport on 'ones' physical and mental health. In the summer term, they will also be running a social action project, where KS2 pupils design a community initiative that will benefit the local community.

Colchester United also run a FREE afterschool football club, where they put pupils through their paces, preparing them for a number of local competitions. Last year, owing to our close connections with COL U, KS1 pupils had the unique opportunity to play at the Western Homes Community Stadium.

Essex Cricket

In the summer term, Essex Cricket Clubs (through Shining stars initiative) work with pupils across all key stages. In addition to curriculum lessons, they run lunchtime/afterschool clubs.

Tiny Rugby (Ben Gale)

We are very fortunate to have a longstanding partnership with Ben Gale @TinyRugbySchool. Not only does Ben provide our staff with 'amazing' ongoing professional development but he runs a variety of afterschool clubs throughout the year.

Harwich and Dovercourt Rugby Club

We are thrilled to be working with the Harwich and Dovercourt Rugby Club to promote rugby and active lifestyles for pupils.

We are also delighted to have strong associations with Dovercourt Swimming pool and Harwich Cricket Club.
