P.E.
At Mayflower Primary school, children are helped to acquire the skills needed to participate with confidence and enjoyment in a range of individual and team activities at school and in the wider community, and to appreciate the place of regular exercise as a way of keeping fit. All pupils have two hours of P.E. timetabled each week to cover the six main areas of the National Curriculum – athletics, dance, games, gymnastics, outdoor/adventurous activities and swimming.
Swimming is offered to all children in KS2 – initially receiving 18 weeks of tuition in year five, as well as intensive booster lessons in year six.
Fun, enjoyment, confidence, competence and self-esteem are at the forefront of our P.E. delivery. Children in Reception and KS1 develop the fundamental skills such as aiming and throwing, balance, co-ordination, control and movement. In KS2, children are able to use these fundamental skills to develop their knowledge and understanding of invasion games such as football, basketball, netball, tag rugby and hockey. These skills are also transferable to striking and fielding games such as cricket and rounders, together with net games such as tennis and volleyball.
