We have had such a busy half term! We have been learning lots in science about everyday materials and what they are used for. We have looked at the how we could describe the materials by discussing their properties. We also enjoyed carrying out a science experiment to find the best material to make a new umbrella with.
This term our topic is Toys and Inventors.
We are busy learning all of our sounds in Year 1 at the moment. Please help your child to practise these sounds at home as much as possible. The children love playing the games on the 'Phonics Play' website. Follow the link below and click on the children's section to find a variety of games.

Would you be willing to listen to children in 1KL read?
We are always looking for volunteers to help the children improve their reading skills.
Please speak to Miss Lilley or Mrs Smith for more details.
The children have been working really hard to improve their reading in Year 1. Reading everyday really helps the children to improve even more. Their reading diary and book should be put into the book box each morning so that the books can be changed and reading can be monitored. Remember that your child will be entered into the Reading Raffle each time they read where they could win lots of exciting prizes. Children will now also be entered into the Mayflower Reading Challenge if they read 5 times a week. They will be in with a chance of winning a book to take home with them!
Each week, children will be given a set of spellings to learn from the list of Year 1 common exception words. Please help your child to learn these spellings using the 'Look, Cover, Say, Write, Check' method. Children will be tested on these spellings every Monday and given a new set to learn on Wednesday. Thank you for your help and support.
Every Wednesday flapjack is sold in the playground at break time for all children at a cost of 20p.
