Sport
At Mayflower, we believe that P.E. (and sports) transcends the national curriculum. As soon as pupils arrive in EYFS (early years), we begin to instil in them the fundamental skills that will allow them to live an active, healthy life. And as pupils progress through the school, we provide them with the opportunity to apply these skills to a range of different sports.
Not only does this allow them to develop teamwork, critical thinking and problem solving - but we also believe that 'there is a sport out there for everyone', and this is the perfect time for them to discover it.
All pupils enjoy two hours of PE lessons each week, taught by one of our sports professions or pupils’ classroom teachers. As well as numerous other opportunities to be physically active - provided by OPAL (outdoor play and learning), lunchtime clubs, afterschool clubs, internal events and inter-schools competitions.
We believe that sport is the perfect environment for pupils to develop our six school virtues: Ambition, Community, Resilience, Honesty, Independence and Respect. In addition to instilling a healthy sense of competition - which pupils can draw upon throughout all of life's challenges.
"Sport is the greatest equaliser. It brings people together, it teaches teamwork."

School Game
We are delighted to announce that we, the Mayflower Primary School, have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2024 / 2025 academic year. This is the third year in a row that we have been awarded ‘gold’ standard.
The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward and recognise school’s engagement (provision and uptake) in the School Games against a national benchmark and to celebrate keeping young people active, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.
We were also awarded the Active Essex’s KS1 Award. This award recognises the work that we have done in providing foundation skills to pupils in KS1, and providing pupils with enrichment opportunities.

External Providers
Mayflower works closely with a number of external providers to offer the best sporting experiences for all of our pupils.
Colchester United Football Club
Representatives from Colchester United Football Club come into school every Monday afternoon to educate all pupils on the benefits of exercise and sport on 'ones' physical and mental health. In the summer term, they will also be running a social action project, where KS2 pupils design a community initiative that will benefit the local community.
Colchester United also run a FREE afterschool football club, where they put pupils through their paces, preparing them for a number of local competitions. Last year, owing to our close connections with COL U, KS1 pupils had the unique opportunity to play at the Western Homes Community Stadium.

Essex Cricket
In the summer term, Essex Cricket Clubs (through Shining stars initiative) work with pupils across all key stages. In addition to curriculum lessons, they run lunchtime/afterschool clubs.

Harwich and Dovercourt Rugby Club
We are thrilled to be working with the Harwich and Dovercourt Rugby Club to promote rugby and active lifestyles for pupils.

We are also delighted to have strong associations with Dovercourt Swimming pool and Harwich Cricket Club.
